The Importance of Proper Handwashing

Washing your hands might not be an exciting thing to do for most people, but it is necessary. Taking this action helps to hold back germs. Cleaning your hands also prevents you from transmitting disease. Here is more information about proper handwashing and what it can do to save people’s lives.

Why is handwashing so important?

In the past, people didn’t wash their hands and didn’t fully understand why this practice is so important. As a result, many people inadvertently killed other individuals. This situation happened all throughout time until the 19th century in Vienna, Austria. A man by the name Ignaz Semmelweis was in charge of obstetrician departments at the University of Vienna.

During his tenor as the chair of the departments, he noticed that many mothers and children were dying. He eventually realized what was happening. His students were performing autopsies to learn more about the human body. After his students dealt with the dead bodies, they went into the delivery room to help birth babies.

The students had cadaverous particles or dead people’s germs on their hands. These germs were extremely dangerous to the living. Especially, vulnerable people such as birthing mothers and their newborn children. Semmelweis had all of his students wash their hands before and after they dealt with any type of patient. Once this happened, the mortality rate in the delivery room had significantly dropped.

Medical Professionals are Professional Handwashers

Medical personnel that work directly with patients commonly wash their hands. They wash their hand frequently throughout a day. These individuals must be professional hand washers because it is a critical part of their profession. Even with today’s technological and medical advancements, medical workers must still wash their hands to make sure that they are not infecting patients or transmitting diseases to them.

People Should Wash their Hands to Stop from Being Sick

Many people don’t wash their hands (or even use hand sanitizer) because they don’t want to, their lazy or they just don’t care. This is very troubling. Conditions such as colds, the flu, diseases, and infections are often spread from person to person. If a person washes their hand they will reduce the incidences related to these problems. Unfortunately, many people can cause others to become seriously ill or even die. This is because they don’t wash their hands. Many kids are notoriously bad about eating food without washing their hands. They are also known to spread sickness and infections to each other because they do practice good hygiene with their hands.

Does hand sanitizer work like regular handwashing?

Hand sanitizer is effective for cleaning a person’s hand. This substance has alcohol which is effective for getting rid of germs and viruses. However, hand sanitizers should not replace handwashing after a person uses the bathroom or when they deal with food. Hand sanitizers can be used by people if they’re somewhere that they cannot easily wash their hands. However, people should wash their hands before they eat food after they use the bathroom and if they are sick. Handwashing is a beneficial and easy way for people to stop the spread of disease and infection.
