Traveling During the COVID-19 Pandemic – First Care Recommendations

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic is still a concern despite what you may hear from influencers or newscasters. If you are looking to travel during this time, we highly recommend that you take precautions to ensure the safety of yourself, your family, your community, and of others with whom you may come in contact. Today, we will review the recommendations provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to negate any myths and remind you of proper procedures.

Recommendations for All

Before traveling, it is highly recommended that you check state, local, and territorial governments restrictions, reports, and recommendations. If there are a high number of COVID-19 cases in the area you plan to travel to, you may want to consider postponing or canceling your trip.

Additionally, be sure to check your accommodation’s COVID-19 prevention practices, whether it is staying at a hotel or with friends. If their practices are lacking, you may want to find alternative accommodations for the duration of your stay.

Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People

For those who are fully vaccinated (which is defined as being two weeks after the completion of the COVID-19 one or two-dose shot), please take the following precautions.

– Wear a mask for the entire duration of public travel, including trains, planes, and buses, as well as in transportation centers.

– In areas of high case reports, consider wearing a mask in a crowded outdoor setting.

– Follow all local and state recommendations.

Recommendations for Not Fully Vaccinated People

If you have not received your vaccination or have not reached the two-week time frame after being fully vaccinated, please take the following precautions.

      Before Travel:

– Within 1 to 3 days of travel, get tested for the virus.

– Wear a mask for the entire duration of public travel, including trains, planes, and buses, as well as in transportation centers.

– Wear a mask in any indoor or outdoor crowded areas while maintaining 6 feet away from anyone not in your traveling party.

– Follow all local and state recommendations.

      After Travel:

– Get tested within 3 to 5 days after travel and self-quarantine for a full 7 days. (It is recommended that you self-quarantine for the entire 7 days even if you have a negative test result.)

– If you are unable to get tested, self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.

– Maintain minimum contact with others for 14 days.

We recommend reviewing the CDC’s guidelines for more information on how you should prepare for traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are elderly, pregnant, or at-risk but still want to travel, we recommend speaking with one of our doctors to discuss your specific situation. We at First Care wish to ensure the safety of our and other communities, so please feel free to make an appointment with us if you have any questions.
